Mozart's concertos for violin and orchestra. Insights, based on Mozart's autographs

Lecture by Wolf-Dieter Seiffert
Mozart's violin concerto autographs (Salzburg, early 1770s) and other early sources from the time of composition have been preserved. They offer us a fascinating insight into (mostly ignored) aspects of performance practice and raise interesting textual questions here and there. The lecture will also explore the question of why there are no "Viennese" violin concertos by Mozart and finally attempt to give an introduction to the colorful variety of the five concertos.

Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, born in Frankfurt/Main, completed his doctorate in musicology in 1990 with a thesis on Mozart's early string quartets. From 2000 to 2023, he was head of the Munich-based publishing house G. Henle Verlag, before which he was editor-in-chief. He has also held several honorary posts, including many years as secretary and then president of RISM (Internationales Quellenlexikon der Musik) and two terms as chairman of the University Council of the Munich University of Music.

Wolf-Dieter Seiffert publishes books, essays and scholarly Urtext editions, primarily on Mozart's instrumental works, including the complete violin concertos. His activities are rounded off by worldwide academic lectures (Europe, USA, Asia) and regular public concert introductions at many music festivals (e.g. Schubertiade Hohenems, Mozartwoche Salzburg, master classes Crans Montana, Kronberg Academy, Schloss Elmau, Klangwelt Klassik Icking, Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker) as well as countless booklet texts. He is currently writing a novel about Domenico Scarlatti.
